A Statistical Investigation - How Smart Are We?

We began our investigation by responding to a series of questions that helped determine which intelligences were the strongest for each individual. Then we had each group gather the class data for one intelligence and create different graphs to display the information. The children then learnt how to interpret their graphs and through this analysis look for trends and patterns. Really interesting results emerged along with a problem, we had more year 5's than Year 6's. Another skill was taught and a graph of averages created which provided a change when comparing data. We also discovered that different graphs provided different information depending on what information we wanted. Finally, as a class we shared our statements and discussed each analysis. In conclusion we were able to determine which intelligences are used more often in Room 8. The challenge now is how we can link our learning into everyones strengths.

Connecting Strengths

What do you Enjoy, what Excites you and what do you Excel at, are the 3 E's that help to identify your strengths. Using your strengths to connect with others allows you to grow and develop your strengths further.

Y charts

Y charts are a wonderful way to reflect on an activity and develop vocabulary in preparation for writing. The year 6's looked at the positive and negative aspects of the activity under the headings Looks Like, Feels Like. Sounds Like.

Class Korowai

He oranga ngakau,
He pikinga waiora.

Positive feelings in your heart will raise your sense of self-worth.

The cloak is woven with ideas we brainstormed about children's rights in our classroom. We looked at how everyone has the right to learn, the right to be happy, the right be safe and the right to be respected. With a partner we decorated the strips of our korowai with words, symbols and pictures to illustrate our ideas about hauora [our well being]. The feathers we made individually and these reflect who we are and some aspect of our spirituality.

Personal Images

An example of our "Monster Names" that are on display. These are created by writing your name and mirror images. Very effective and fun to do.

Our portrait sketches look awesome. We cut our portrait in half and then sketched the other side to complete the picture.

The last piece of art work is all about line, using thick and thin lines to provide detail. These images are copied from photographs.
